What are fire door assemblies?
A
fire door assembly is made up of the door leaf, flat packed lining,
intumescent seals and ironmongery. Components can be sourced
from different Builders Merchants and manufacturers such
as Tayco who compete on price and who may allow for negotiation.
Fire door assemblies are cost effective as they allow
each component to be ordered separately, at different times, enabling
the purchase cost to be staggered. Lead times are short and quotations
are quick and easy to obtain.
What are fire door sets?
With
a factory assembled fire door set, all the components are delivered
at the same time, assembled as a set, from the same manufacturer.
Ease of installation might be achieved but delays between
fitting the lining, door, intumescent seals and ironmongery can result
in components being lost, stolen or damaged.

Only fire door sets or assemblies comply with building regulations.
A certified fire door on it’s own will not do.

Building
Regulations
2000
edition of approved document B encouraged the use of third party
certified passive fire resistant products to provide
confidence in appropriate standards of workmanship.
CERTIFIRE
In
1996 the British Woodworking Federation appointed Certifire, which
is the certification arm of Warrington Fire Research
Ltd, as an independent organisation for the certifying of passive fire
resisting products. The first stage of the scheme covered door
leaves and factory assembled door sets and by 1998 ninety
per cent of all door leaves sold (two million) were Certifire accredited.
There has been successful marketing and promotion of the scheme’s
aims of eliminating the specification, supply, purchase
and use of non-certificated fire doors and linings.
The
BWF Certifire scheme has now been extended to include manufacturers
of fire door linings, intumescent seals and ironmongery.
You can now procure a fire door assembly, using components from
different sources, all of which will be covered by the BWF
Certifire scheme. Tayco can supply certified fire door linings for
use in propriety fire door assemblies. Many specifiers and builders
are not aware that a more cost competitive alternative to factory
assembled fire door sets is available and that it will satisfy Local Authority Building
Control and Fire Officers. Certification can also affect building
insurance premiums, reducing the service costs of buildings.
